If you have holidayed in Belek or Lara before, reset your expectations. Kalkan has almost no large all-inclusive resorts, no aquaparks and no sprawling beach strip. What it has instead is a working harbour, a cluster of rooftop restaurants in the old town, and hundreds of privately owned villas terraced into the hillside above.

That changes the shape of your holiday. You wake up when you want, swim before breakfast without booking a sunbed, eat dinner at a different harbour restaurant every night, and treat the pool terrace as your main living space. For families and groups of friends splitting a villa between them, the maths often works out better than several hotel rooms too.

Private pool. Nearly every villa has one, so the pool is not the differentiator, the pool’s day is. Ask two questions before you book. First, when does the sun leave the pool terrace? A hillside villa facing the wrong way can lose direct sun by mid-afternoon, which matters enormously with children. Second, is the pool shared with the villa next door? Some developments have paired or communal pools despite the wording.

Also check for a shallow or splash section if you have toddlers. Many Kalkan pools are a single uniform depth, and some are deeper than parents expect.

Sea view. In Kalkan this ranges from a full uninterrupted panorama over the bay and the islands, to a slice of blue visible from one corner of the roof terrace. Neither is dishonest, but they are very different holidays. Look at photos taken from the terrace rather than of the terrace, and if the listing only shows drone shots, ask.

Infinity pool. Genuinely common in Kalkan thanks to the terrain, and worth seeking out, but an infinity edge on a low wall with no elevation is just a pool with a nice edge.

Airport transfers are long. Dalaman is the nearest airport at roughly two hours. From Antalya it is a considerably longer drive along the coast, typically three and a half hours or more depending on traffic and stops. Book a transfer in advance rather than improvising on arrival, especially with luggage and children.

Consider a hire car, but be honest about the hills. A car gives you Patara, Kaputaş, Saklıkent and Kaş easily. But villa driveways in Kalkan can be steep and narrow, and parking in the centre is genuinely difficult in high season. Many regulars use taxis for evenings out and hire a car for only a few days.

Budget for taxis. Unless you are in Ortaalan, you will taxi down to dinner and back up afterwards most nights. It is a normal part of a Kalkan holiday, not a sign you booked badly.
