Sea Kayaking in Kekova: Sunken City Tours (Honest Guide)

Sea Kayaking in Kekova: Paddling Over the Sunken City

🔵 Intro

There is a stretch of water off the Lycian coast where you can look straight down through the surface and see staircases. Not ruins on a hillside. Actual steps, doorways and harbour walls, sitting a metre or two below your feet, where an earthquake dropped a Roman-era settlement into the sea in the second century AD.

Most visitors see Kekova’s sunken city from the deck of a boat, twenty other people at the rail beside them. A smaller number see it from a kayak, gliding silently a few centimetres above the stonework with nobody else around. If you are choosing one water activity on this coast, this is the one people talk about years later.

Here is what a Kekova kayaking day actually involves, how hard it really is, and the honest answer to whether it works as a day trip from Antalya.

🔵 What the day actually looks like

Kayak tours all launch from Üçağız, the small harbour village closest to the ruins. If you are staying in Kaş or Kalkan, transport is usually included and the day runs roughly like this.

Around 8am, pickup from your accommodation in Kaş, then a drive of about 45 minutes to Üçağız. From Kalkan the bus leaves earlier, around 7am, with roughly an hour on the road.

Around 9am, you are at the water. Life jackets, a safety briefing and a short paddling lesson come first, and the guides genuinely do assume most of the group has never done this before.

Around 9.30am, you set off from Üçağız with a motorised support boat escorting the group. That support boat matters more than it sounds: it means anyone who tires can hop on board at any point, so nobody gets stranded.

Around 10.15am, you reach Tersane Bay (Shipyard Bay) on Kekova Island, with the remains of a Byzantine shipyard on the shore. This is usually the swimming stop.

Then the main event. The group paddles slowly along the Sunken City, with the guide pointing out foundations, staircases and carved rooms just below the surface. This is the part people photograph endlessly, and it is genuinely as good as the pictures.

Around 11.30am, you pull in at Kaleköy, the village built on ancient Simena. You get around 45 minutes here: hike up to the castle for one of the best panoramas on the whole Lycian coast, browse the tiny stalls, or just swim in the bay below. A small entrance fee applies at the castle.

Early afternoon, you paddle back past Theimussa, where Lycian sarcophagi stand half in the water along the shoreline, then return to base for lunch in Üçağız.

Total day, roughly six hours including transfers, with about four hours of that on the water.

🟧 IMPORTANT: NO SWIMMING OVER THE RUINS

The sunken city is a protected archaeological zone, and swimming and diving directly over the ruins are not permitted. This is not your operator being difficult, it is national protection law, and it is exactly why kayaking has become the best way to see it. You get closer than any boat can, without breaking the rules.

🔵 Kayak, boat or glass-bottom? An honest comparison

Kekova is sold in several formats and they suit very different people.

The short version: kayak if you are reasonably fit and want the experience. Take the boat if you want a relaxed day with lunch and swimming. Choose the glass-bottom option if getting wet or paddling is not realistic for your group.

🔵 How hard is it, honestly?

Easier than most people fear, harder than doing nothing.

The guides describe it as roughly equivalent to a long brisk walk, and that is a fair comparison. The kayaks are stable sit-on-top or tandem models, the waters around Kekova are unusually sheltered, and the pace is deliberately slow because the whole point is looking down rather than racing ahead. Complete beginners make up most of every group.

Two things genuinely help. First, paddle in pairs if you are travelling with someone stronger or weaker than you, since a tandem evens out the effort. Second, remember the support boat is there, and using it is not a failure, it is exactly what it is for.

Skip it if you have back problems, are pregnant, or have shoulder or wrist injuries. The boat trip gets you to the same places without the strain.

🟧 WHO IS THIS FOR?

✅ Book the kayak tour if you are…

  • Reasonably active, even if you have never kayaked before
  • A couple or a pair of friends who want something more memorable than a deck chair
  • Travelling with teenagers who will be bored on a standard boat trip
  • Interested in the history and want a guide who actually explains what you are looking at
  • Staying in Kaş, Kalkan or nearby and want the standout day of your trip
  • Keen on photography, because the kayak angle is unbeatable

🚤 Take the boat trip instead if you are…

  • Travelling with young children
  • In a mixed group with very different fitness levels
  • Managing back, shoulder or joint problems, or pregnant
  • After a relaxed day with lunch, sunbathing and several swim stops

❌ Rethink the whole plan if you are…

  • Based in Antalya city, Belek, Side or Alanya with only one free day (see below)
  • Visiting in the depths of winter, when tours run rarely or not at all

🔵 The honest bit: can you do it from Antalya?

Not comfortably, no.

Üçağız is a long way west along the coast road from Antalya, and the drive is winding rather than fast. Doing it as a return day trip would mean the better part of six or seven hours in a vehicle wrapped around four hours of paddling, which turns a beautiful day into an endurance test.

If Kekova is high on your list, the sensible move is to base yourself in Kaş or Kalkan for two or three nights. Both are lovely towns in their own right, both offer easy pickups for the kayak tour, and you free up your remaining days for Kaputaş, Patara and Saklıkent, which are all on the same side of the coast.

If you are locked into an Antalya base and cannot move, take the Demre, Myra and Kekova boat tour instead. It is a long day, but it is a proper coach excursion built for that distance and it includes the Lycian rock tombs at Myra and the church of St Nicholas along the way.

🏛️ Staying in Kaş
or Kalkan?

Kayak tours include round-trip transport from both towns. Check which departures still have space for your dates before the summer weeks fill.

🔵 What to bring

Essentials: reef-safe sun cream (you are on reflective water for four hours, and this is where people get badly caught out), a hat that will not blow off, sunglasses with a strap, a refillable water bottle and swimwear worn under your clothes.

Highly recommended: water shoes or old trainers for the rocky entry points, a dry bag or waterproof phone pouch, and a light long-sleeved top. Long sleeves sound counterintuitive in Turkish summer, but they beat sunburnt forearms.

Leave behind: anything you cannot afford to drop in the sea. Kayaks tip occasionally and phones do not float.

Money: bring some cash for the castle entrance at Kaleköy, drinks and tips.

🔵 Best time of year

May, June, September and October are the sweet spot. The sea is calm, the water is clear, the temperature is comfortable for four hours of paddling, and the light is better for photographs. September in particular has the warmest sea of the year.

July and August are stunning but genuinely hot on open water with no shade. Book the earliest departure you can and take the sun protection seriously.

November to March is the off season. Tours run rarely if at all, and the weather is unpredictable, so check availability rather than assuming.

🔵 Frequently asked questions

Do you need kayaking experience for the Kekova tour?
No. Every tour starts with a safety briefing and a paddling lesson, and most people in your group will be first-timers. Guides describe the effort as similar to a long brisk walk, and a motorised support boat accompanies the group so anyone who tires can climb aboard.

How long is the Kekova kayaking tour?
About six hours in total from Kaş including transfers, with roughly four hours spent on the water. Tours from Kalkan start earlier and run slightly longer because of the extra driving.

Can you swim over the sunken city?
No. The sunken city is a protected archaeological area and swimming and diving above the ruins are prohibited. Tours include separate swimming stops in nearby bays such as Tersane Bay, and kayaking is the closest legal way to view the ruins.

Where do Kekova kayak tours start from?
All of them launch from Üçağız, the harbour village closest to the ruins. Round-trip transport is usually included from Kaş (about 45 minutes) and Kalkan (about an hour). You can also book directly from Üçağız if you are staying nearby.

Is Kekova kayaking suitable for children?
Older children and teenagers usually love it, especially in a tandem kayak with an adult. It is less suitable for young children given the length of the day and the sun exposure. Check the minimum age with the operator, as it varies.

Can you do Kekova kayaking as a day trip from Antalya?
It is not practical. The drive each way is long and winding, and you would spend more time in a vehicle than on the water. Base yourself in Kaş or Kalkan for a couple of nights, or take the Demre, Myra and Kekova boat excursion instead, which is designed for that distance.

What is included in a Kekova kayak tour?
Typically the kayak, paddle and life jacket, an English-speaking guide, a support boat, round-trip transport from your town, and lunch or a snack depending on the operator. The castle entrance fee at Kaleköy, drinks and tips are usually extra.

Is the sunken city really visible from a kayak?
Yes, and clearly. The ruins sit just below the surface in exceptionally clear water, so you can see staircases, walls and foundations directly beneath the kayak. Calm mornings give the best visibility, which is another reason to book an early departure.

🔵 The verdict

Kekova by kayak is one of the few genuinely special things you can do on this coast, and it manages to be an active day, a history lesson and a swim all at once. If you are fit enough to walk briskly for an hour and you can base yourself in Kaş or Kalkan for a night or two, book it without much hesitation.

If any of that does not fit, the boat trip visits the same magical stretch of water and there is no shame in taking the easy version. The staircases under the surface are just as extraordinary either way.
