Researching medical tourism in Antalya involves more than choosing travel dates. Alongside the clinical questions you discuss with qualified professionals, there are practical decisions about accommodation, transport, a companion’s stay and changes to your return journey.

Understanding Medical Tourism in Turkey

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) describes medical tourism as travelling abroad for medical, surgical or dental treatment, and lists cosmetic surgery, dental procedures and cardiac surgery as the most common reasons people travel. Its Turkey health advice also points out that standards vary widely, both between and within countries. The FCDO says it is aware of seven British nationals who died in Turkey in 2025 after medical procedures, and that others have needed further treatment for complications.

Its advice to anyone considering treatment in Turkey is to discuss plans with their own doctor, dentist or clinician first, and to do independent research, because companies selling treatment have a financial interest in the booking.

How Turkey regulates health tourism

In Turkey, health tourism for international patients is covered by a Ministry of Health regulation on international health tourism and tourist health, published in the Official Gazette on 26 April 2025 (issue 32882). Under it:

  • Health facilities and the intermediary agencies that organise treatment, accommodation and transfers for international patients must hold an International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate. The Ministry issues it to facilities; USHAŞ, the Ministry-linked international health services company, issues it to agencies.
  • Authorised facilities and agencies must work through HealthTürkiye, the Ministry’s official health tourism portal, which also runs a 24/7 support line (+90 850 288 38 38).
  • According to the Ministry’s announcement of the regulation, complication insurance became mandatory for surgical procedures performed in an operating theatre under health tourism.

A practical step is to ask any provider or agency for its authorisation certificate and to check its listing through HealthTürkiye. The FCDO notes that it does not endorse any practitioner or facility, and a listing is not a substitute for your own clinician’s advice.

Why is Turkey popular for medical tourism?

The Turkish government’s own portal promotes the country on cost, direct flights from more than 200 destinations, short waiting times and modern facilities. Those are the reasons commonly given by people who travel. The UK government’s advice is the counterweight: standards vary, aftercare at home may be limited, and planned treatment abroad is treated as a commercial arrangement, so the FCDO usually cannot help with disputes over care or costs. Reading both sides before you commit gives you a much clearer picture.

Planning a Stay in Antalya

Antalya Airport is about 13 km from the city centre, and the city is spread out along the coast, from Konyaaltı in the west to Lara in the east. Before booking anything, get the exact address of every appointment and plan your stay around it, not around a hotel’s description of being “central”.

  • Accommodation: check the route from each shortlisted hotel to the appointment address at the time of day you will travel. Our dental treatment travel checklist has a full list of questions to ask a hotel, from step-free access to extra-night costs.
  • Flights: ask your treating clinician when you can expect to travel home, then choose fares whose change conditions you understand. Do not commit to non-refundable travel before the schedule is confirmed.
  • Local transport: if a provider offers an airport pickup, ask whether journeys to appointments are included. Our airport transport comparison explains the general options.
  • Medicines: British prescriptions are not accepted in Turkish pharmacies. Our pharmacy guide explains opening hours and how to find the duty pharmacy.

Questions to Ask Before Travelling

The FCDO’s Medical Tourism Planning Checklist is the most complete list. From a travel-planning point of view, make sure you have written answers to these:

  • Does the facility, and any agency involved, hold a current health tourism authorisation certificate?
  • Who exactly will treat you, and will you speak to them before you travel?
  • Will you receive your treatment plan, consent forms and discharge summary in a language you understand?
  • What happens if dates change or you need to stay longer, and who pays for the extra nights?
  • Whom do you contact if you have concerns after you get home?
  • Does your travel insurance cover the planned treatment and possible complications? The FCDO notes that standard travel insurance does not normally cover travel for elective surgery, and a UK GHIC or EHIC is not valid in Turkey.

Arrangements for a Companion

Travelling with someone you trust makes the practical side much easier. Before booking, agree when they will need to be with you, make sure they have the treating team’s contact details, and check whether your hotel room can be shared or extended. If your companion plans some sightseeing of their own, they should fit it around your appointment schedule rather than the other way round.

Your companion should carry a copy of your key documents: passport details, insurance policy number and emergency phone line, the provider’s address and phone number, and your return flight booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is medical tourism in Antalya regulated?
Yes. Under a Turkish Ministry of Health regulation in force since April 2025, health facilities and agencies serving international patients must hold an International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate and work through the official HealthTürkiye portal. Ask any provider for its certificate.

Does travel insurance cover medical tourism?
Usually not as standard. The FCDO says standard travel insurance does not normally cover you if you travel for elective surgery, so ask insurers specifically about planned treatment and complications.

Can I use my GHIC or EHIC in Antalya?
No. The FCDO says the European Health Insurance Card and Global Health Insurance Card are not valid in Turkey, and neither covers planned treatment.

Does Antalya Experiences arrange medical treatment?
No. We publish independent travel information only. We do not select providers, arrange treatment or collect medical records.

📝 A Local’s Note

Antalya’s summer heat is serious from June to September, often well into the 30s°C. If your schedule is flexible, ask whether the cooler months of spring or autumn would work for your appointments; waiting outside or walking between addresses is far more comfortable then.

Save the provider’s address in Turkish characters and keep a printed copy. Phones run out of battery, and a written address is the fastest way to get a taxi driver to the right street.
