The museum closed on 16 July 2025 over earthquake vulnerability concerns with the old building. Rather than a renovation, the structure itself was demolished on 14 to 16 September 2025, after public protest from cultural and civil society groups who wanted the building preserved. The collection was not lost, it was moved into storage while an entirely new museum building goes up on the same site.
When Will It Reopen?
As of August 2026, a construction sign at the site names 26 December 2026 as the target date for this phase of the rebuild (officially labelled “Antalya Yeni Müze Yapımı 2. Etapı”, Antalya New Museum Construction, Phase 2). Take that date as a target, not a promise: local reporting from the same month noted that foundation excavation work was still incomplete over a year after demolition, with delays blamed on legal challenges and difficult ground conditions. Where to See Ancient Artifacts in Antalya Right Now
The good news is the collection itself is safe, and Antalya already has a genuine alternative open today: the Antalya Necropolis Museum in Muratpaşa, Turkey’s first museum built specifically around an ancient necropolis (burial site), displaying tombstones, sarcophagi and burial artifacts uncovered on site. It is a different, smaller experience than the old Archaeological Museum’s full collection, but it is a real museum with real ancient material, not a placeholder. Entrance is around 270 TL, open 08:30 to 22:00 in summer and 08:30 to 17:30 in winter, closed Mondays, and MuseumPass Türkiye is accepted for free entry if you already hold one.
