Saklıkent means “hidden city” in Turkish, and the gorge earns the name, a narrow crack in the mountains with walls up to 300 metres high and barely 2 to 4 metres apart at its narrowest point. It is one of the most-mentioned day trips from Fethiye, but a lot of guests turn up without knowing the water is genuinely cold or that there are really two different ways to visit it. Here is what to actually expect.
What Saklıkent Actually Is
The canyon runs for nearly 18km total, carved by a glacial meltwater river through the Ak Dağları mountains inland from Fethiye. Only a fraction of that length is set up for visitors. Most people experience the first stretch: a wooden walkway bolted to the cliff face above the river, followed by an option to keep going on foot through the water itself.
Boardwalk or Wade In: Pick Based on Your Day
There are genuinely two different visits here, and it is worth deciding which one you actually want before you go.
The boardwalk (around 1 hour). A wooden walkway takes you along the cliff edge above the river without getting wet, giving you the scale of the canyon walls and a look down at the water below. This is the easier option and enough for most people who just want to see it.
Wading through the river (2 to 3 hours). Past the end of the boardwalk, the canyon continues and visitors can wade, scramble and sometimes swim through the accessible section, roughly 700 to 800 metres of it, over an uneven rocky riverbed. This is the version worth doing if you want the actual “inside the canyon” experience, but it is genuinely cold, slow going in places, and not something to attempt in flip-flops.
The Water Is Colder Than You Think
This is the detail most guests underestimate. The river is glacier and spring fed, running between roughly 5°C and 8°C year round, even in the height of summer. It is refreshing for a few minutes, genuinely cold if you are in it for an hour. Bring or hire water shoes, the riverbed is uneven and slippery, and a helmet is provided (and worth wearing) for the narrower sections where the walls close in overhead.
Practical Details
Entrance is around 250 TL for adults, 125 TL for students as of 2026 (cash or card accepted at the gate), and the site is typically open 08:45 to around 19:00 to 19:30 in summer, with last entry around 17:30 to 18:00. It sits about 45km from Fethiye, roughly 45 to 60 minutes inland by road toward Seydikemer, reachable by dolmuş (shared minibus) with the last return around 19:30, or by car or organized tour.

Can non-swimmers do the wading section?
Yes, most of the accessible stretch is wading depth over uneven rock rather than deep swimming, but footing matters more than swimming ability. Water shoes make a real difference.
What should I actually bring?
Quick-dry shorts or swimwear, water shoes, a waterproof pouch for your phone and valuables, and a change of dry clothes for afterward.
Is Saklıkent worth it if I only have half a day?
Yes, the boardwalk alone is a worthwhile hour-long stop, you do not need the full wading route to appreciate the scale of the place.

Two things to know before you go. First, that cold water is genuinely a shock in the first minute, ease in rather than jumping, and know you will warm up once you are moving. Second, several riverside restaurants at the entrance serve trout (alabalık) pulled straight from tanks fed by the same spring water, a proper post-canyon lunch and a nice way to end the visit rather than rushing straight back to the car.
