Antalya doesn’t get the cruise traffic of Istanbul or Kusadasi, but it’s an increasingly common stop on eastern Mediterranean itineraries, and a good one: this is one of the few ports where you can combine a genuine ancient Roman theatre, a walkable old town, and a swim, all in a single day, if you plan the logistics right. Here’s what a port call in Antalya actually looks like and how to make the most of it.
📝 A Local’s Note
The port itself is an industrial free-zone area with nothing to see or do, it’s purely a place you pass through. Don’t linger expecting a waterfront town at the port gates, get moving toward Kaleici or your excursion straight away to make the most of your time ashore.
If your ship is only in port for 6 to 8 hours, be realistic: pick ONE of Kaleici-plus-Duden-Waterfalls or a full Aspendos/Perge run, not both. The 45-minute-plus drive time each way to Aspendos eats a large chunk of a short call, and rushing back late for all-aboard is a genuinely stressful way to end a nice day.
Where the port actually is
Antalya’s cruise terminal is at the Antalya Free Zone Port in Liman Mahallesi, about 12km from Kaleici (the old town) and roughly a 20-minute taxi or shuttle ride depending on traffic. There’s no walkable town at the port itself, this is a working free-zone facility, so you’ll need transport into the city or onward to an excursion regardless of your plans. Cruise lines typically offer a shuttle into town for a fee; independent taxis are also readily available at the terminal.

The best shore excursions by time available
If you have half a day (4–5 hours ashore): stick close. Head straight to Kaleici, the walled old town with the Hadrian’s Gate (a genuine 2nd-century Roman arch), cobbled Ottoman-era streets, and the harbour. Add Düden Waterfalls, about 15 minutes north, where boat tours let you see the falls cascading directly into the sea from below. This combination doesn’t require a long transfer and leaves margin for delays.
If you have a full day (7+ hours ashore): the ancient sites become realistic. Perge is about 30 minutes east, a genuinely impressive Roman-era city with a 3rd-century-BC theatre and a colonnaded street. Aspendos, the best-preserved Roman theatre in the world, is a little further but worth the extra drive if ancient history is your priority, see our full Aspendos Theatre guide. Both can be combined into one excursion if your time genuinely allows it, but don’t try to add Kaleici on top of a full Aspendos-Perge day, you’ll be watching the clock the whole time.
If you want culture without a long transfer: the Antalya Museum holds an excellent collection of Lycian and Roman artefacts and sits close to the city centre, a good option if you want serious history without eating up your whole time ashore on transport.
Independent vs organised excursions
For Kaleici and Duden Waterfalls, going independently by taxi is straightforward, cheaper, and gives you control over your own schedule, there’s no real navigational difficulty once you’re in the city. For Aspendos or Perge, an organised shore excursion or a pre-booked private tour removes the guesswork around timing your return to the ship, which matters more the further you go. Whichever you choose, agree a fixed return time with your driver and build in a buffer, missing an all-aboard because of Antalya traffic is a real risk worth respecting.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is the cruise port from Antalya city centre?
About 12km from Kaleici, roughly a 20-minute taxi or shuttle ride.
Can I walk from the port into town?
No. The port is an industrial free-zone area with no walkable town nearby, you’ll need a taxi or shuttle.
What’s the best shore excursion for a short port call?
Kaleici old town combined with Duden Waterfalls, both close to the city with minimal transfer time.
Can I visit Aspendos on a cruise stop?
Yes, if you have a full day ashore (7+ hours). It’s further out, so it needs more of your available time than a Kaleici-only visit.
Should I book an organised excursion or go independently?
Independent taxis work well for close destinations like Kaleici and Duden. For further sites like Aspendos, an organised excursion or pre-booked private tour reduces the risk of missing your ship’s departure.
