The short harbour boat trips mentioned in the 4pm flex hour mostly run in the warmer months, roughly April to October. If you’re visiting in winter, the bazaar option isn’t just the flexible choice, it’s realistically the only one — check ahead rather than planning your afternoon around a boat.
If your flight or ship departure is tight, build in a 30-minute buffer somewhere in the afternoon rather than the evening. Traffic on the D400 near the airport picks up around 5-6pm, and an itinerary this packed has no slack if that final taxi runs slow.
🔵 BEFORE YOU START: THREE RULES FOR A ONE-DAY VISIT
Start by 8:00 AM. This is non-negotiable. Morning light in the old town is the best of the day, the lanes are empty until the tour groups arrive around ten, and every hour before noon is worth two in the afternoon heat.
Wear real shoes. Kaleiçi’s cobblestones are original, uneven and hillier than any map suggests. This is a walking day.

🔵 8:00 AM — TURKISH BREAKFAST IN KALEİÇİ
Begin the way this country begins: with a proper Turkish breakfast. Cheeses, olives, eggs, honey and kaymak, warm bread, tomatoes still tasting of the sun, and tea refilled until you surrender. Several courtyard cafés in the old town open early. Do not rush this hour; you are fuelling a long day, and Turkish breakfast is a destination in itself, not a pit stop.
🔵 9:00 AM — HADRIAN’S GATE AND THE OLD TOWN
Walk to Hadrian’s Gate, three white marble arches raised in 130 AD for a Roman emperor’s visit and still serving as the front door of the old town. Before you pass through, look down: the deep grooves in the stone threshold were cut by centuries of Roman cart wheels. You are about to walk a road that has been in continuous use for nearly two thousand years.
Inside is Kaleiçi, and for the next 60–90 minutes your job is to wander: restored Ottoman mansions, Roman walls, bougainvillea, cats supervising everything. Three landmarks to thread into the wandering: the fluted Yivli Minaret, the city’s 13th-century Seljuk symbol; the Kesik Minare, a building that has been a Roman temple, a Byzantine church and an Ottoman mosque in one lifetime after another; and the Roman-era Hıdırlık Tower at the cliff edge. Descend the lanes to the old harbour, a small crescent of water cupped in the cliffs that served as the city’s working port from Roman times until the 1970s. Wooden gulets rock at their moorings where grain ships once loaded. Take fifteen minutes and a glass of tea at a harbourside café. On a one-day visit, this pause is not lost time; it is the point.

A short ride west (the vintage Nostaljik Tramvay along the seafront is the scenic way) brings you to the Antalya Museum, one of Turkey’s finest. With limited time, walk straight to the Hall of Gods and the sculpture galleries: marble emperors, gods and heroes excavated from nearby Perge, in a state of preservation that stops people mid-step. 🔵 1:00 PM — LUNCH AT KONYAALTI BEACH
The museum stands practically on top of Konyaaltı Beach, so lunch takes zero transit time. Pick a beach café on the promenade, order fish or meze, and enjoy one of the Mediterranean’s stranger views: a beach with a 2,000-metre mountain wall rising straight behind the swimmers. 🔵 2:30 PM — THE LOWER DÜDEN WATERFALLS
A short taxi east brings you to one of the planet’s rarer sights: the Lower Düden Waterfalls, where a river simply ends by hurling itself 40 metres off a cliff into the open sea. You have earned a choice. Option one: a short boat trip from the old harbour, which passes the Düden falls from sea level — the best angle of all — with the cliffs and caves of the coastline thrown in. Option two: return to Kaleiçi for unhurried souvenir hunting and the corners you missed this morning. On a hot summer day, the boat wins; the breeze on the water is the afternoon’s best air conditioning.

🔵 5:30 PM — SUNSET AT KARAALİOĞLU PARK
Here is the local secret most one-day visitors never find: Karaalioğlu Park, the clifftop park just east of the harbour. Free, no queue, no ticket, and the finest viewpoint in the city. As the sun drops, the Taurus Mountains across the bay turn violet, the sea goes gold, and the Hıdırlık Tower stands in silhouette. Tourists pay for rooftop bars two streets away; locals bring tea to this bench. Be on the cliff edge 30 minutes before sunset.
🔵 7:00 PM — DINNER IN THE OLD TOWN
Finish where you started. The harbour terraces have the views; the streets two or three lanes back have the better kitchens at half the price — pick according to mood and budget. The correct final order in Antalya: meze, grilled fish, and baklava with tea while the old town’s lanterns come on around you. If your flight or ship allows it, one slow glass of rakı at the harbour is the proper farewell.
🔵 WHAT TO SKIP WITHOUT GUILT
A one-day plan is defined by what it refuses. Leave these for your return trip: Aspendos and Perge, magnificent but each half a day with transit; the Tahtalı cable car, a 3–4 hour round trip toward Kemer; Land of Legends, a full day by itself; and any thought of Pamukkale or Cappadocia, which need a day or more each. Can I see Aspendos in one day from Antalya?
Only by sacrificing the city itself. Aspendos is 47 km away, and combining it with the old town and museum makes the day rushed. If the Roman theatre is your priority, build the day around a guided ruins tour and drop the museum instead.
Is Antalya walkable in one day?
Kaleiçi is entirely walkable and best on foot. The museum, beach and waterfalls each need a short tram or taxi ride of 15 to 20 minutes. No rental car is needed for this itinerary.
What time should I start a one-day Antalya visit?
By 8:00 AM. The old town is at its most beautiful and peaceful before mid-morning, and in summer the early hours are the only comfortable ones for walking. An early start effectively adds half a day to your visit.
